Cake International - Birmingham 2022
This sparkling beauty came to life as a result of remaniscing about a trip to The Royal Opera House some years back to indulge in everyones favourite Swan Lake. I’ve long been fascinated with the tutus prima ballerinas get to wear but sadly never had enough grace to get past second position!
Inspired by Maggie Austin and an incredible workshop that I was fortunate enough to attend at The Dawn Weston Cake School in Bermondsey a couple of months ago I was very eager to have a glittery play (much to the horrid or my husband who is still not enjoying the sparkling kitchen). Maggie is my absolute all time cake idol, her stunning designs, calm gentle way and passion for teaching cannot help but inspire.
She taught me so many techniques, unlocked mysteries, shared methods and divulged process but most of all she generously shared her wealth of knowledge in the most inspiring way.
Before long I don’t doubt that the market will be flooded with this mystery technique but for now it is between those that were lucky enough to secure a date with Maggie; I count myself very fortunate and pinch myself daily.
Cake International - Birmingham 2022
Here’s one of my babies from Cake International at the weekend with a little bit of extra sugar foliage that I added yesterday.
It was my first time entering @thecakeshows and I felt so out of my depth as the standard from all the cake designers is so high, plus there are a mind boggling number of rules and the schedule is extremely specific, plus I’m not the greatest rule follower as I tend to wing my life!
The judges feedback was fair and will be really helpful should I ever muster the courage to enter again but for now I shall just sit back and enjoy my Bronze award whilst taking stock of how far I’ve come with regards to my techniques, self belief and courage.
I have come a long way to go with regards to valuing myself and my skill set but there’s always room for improvement!
In the words of my wise old Dad “never ever give“
We recently entered The Wedding Industry Awards and would very much like to thank all the lovely couples that took the time to vote for us.
In such a competitive industry reviews and word of mouth make such a difference to small businesses so I wish to convey my heartfelt thanks to you, I am forever grateful for the support you all show me.
Thank you x

We have meaning to send a review about Annemarie for a few weeks now and just have to get the words down and say how absolutely incredibly talented a cake maker and designer she is! We were so lucky to find Annemarie’s company at the perfect time and for her to have been available to make our wedding cake dreams come true. From the very first contact, to meeting at her home and tasting some mouth-watering samples, she made the whole process wonderfully easy and is honestly one of the loveliest suppliers we had the pleasure of meeting and working with. We felt that nothing was too much trouble for her. She listened to what we wanted, answered everything we asked and made the perfect, most beautiful and delicious cake for our big day. We had different flavours for each tier, which were all so delicious and even sourced beautiful flowers and foliage from a talented florist and put together such a work of art, we were blown away by our cake on the day. She even kindly lent us her cake stand and hoop which made the final touches just perfect andliaised with our florist on the decoration and logistics. All of our guests commented on how stunning the cake looked and were very impressed on its taste - people kept just coming back for more in the night, they were hooked! On top of all this, we had several guests with dietary needs and Annemarie went above and beyond to create some wonderful alternative sweet treats, which she beautifully packaged and signposted with gorgeous handwritten markers of ‘vegan’, etc. The attention to detail in all of her work is evident, nothing is missed and her creations taste like no other! We would not hesitate to use this company for any cake needs, she made our wedding cake dreams come true and we are so grateful for everything. Thank you! xxx
‘Thank you so much, we are so grateful! Absolutely delicious!! You absolutely smashed it, it couldn’t have been better! Love Kirstie & Matt xx’
‘Thank you so much for making the beautiful wedding cake for Abigail and Richard , it was really stunning and everyone was amazed , it was exactly as they hoped for , if not better! They especially liked Paddington and his suitcase but of course the beautiful flowers and strawberries were incredible ! Not only that , it tasted delicious as well . Also , thank you for lending us the cake stand and ceremonial knife which really set it off nicely!’
Yay … There‘s great excitement in The Little Cake Company HQ (kitchen) this morning to learn that we have been shortlisted as a finalist for the Kent Wedding Awards.
How humbling to be amongst such talent.
EEK…. For the longest time (years) I have deliberated about entering The Cake International competition in Birmingham. Every year I almost do and then nerves always get the better of me.
The standard of the competition is phenomenal, there are so many incredibly talented cake designers out there, judging is also extremely stringent with long lists of do’s and don‘ts, plus I’m not the greatest rule follower!
My style is very organic and natural and I will probably be penalised for all sorts but this year I have Idecided to face my fear of being scrutinised and view the experience as a good opportunity for me to have a deadline to make some dummy cakes, nothing more nothings less.
I am great procrastinator and often (read always) find a millions things that need doing before I set down to big tasks. Even as a young girl I drove my parents mad by sharpening every pencil in the house before I set to doing my homework. To be productive I need a small time frame; ‘the task always expands to the time available’ with me!
Watch this space… I have no expectations of anything other than getting a couple of dummy’s made and now that I’ve offered it out there I’m committed (hopefully) to getting both creative and productive.
